Big Sunday happily welcomes you to Our Really Big Community Calendar

We try to include all kinds of volunteering and helping opportunities for all kinds of interests, talents, passions, and ages! As you’ll see, these include volunteering opportunities (one-time and long-term) as well as the chance to support a nonprofit by attending fundraising events. Plus, of course, we include all of Big Sunday’s homegrown events, too! Whoever you are, and whatever you do, there is someone out there who could use your help.

If you have questions about our calendar, or would like to add a listing, please contact calendar@bigsunday.org or submit your event/opportunity via the button below.

STUDIO VOLUNTEERISM

Studio volunteers work alongside teaching artists to support K-12 students as they explore their own creativity in one of our seven studios: Visual Arts, Ceramics, Creativity Lab, Media Arts, Drama, Dance, and Music. Studio volunteerism requires a once-per-week, two-hour commitment for the duration of a session: 3 – 10 weeks total, depending on the program. In order to be eligible for studio volunteerism, you must participate in a one-on-one interview and orientation. Additionally, all studio volunteers are required to sign a background check consent prior to serving in the studios with students.

LEARNING AND ACHIEVING THROUGH THE ARTS (LATA) serves elementary and middle school students from the Los Angeles Unified School District and local charter schools. Twice a week, for seven- or eight-week sessions, students and their classroom teachers are brought to the Inner-City Arts campus for experiential instruction in the visual and performing arts during the school day. LATA studio volunteers support by assisting teaching artists with studio set-up and transitions, motivating students to engage in the creative process, and sometimes participating in projects and exercises alongside students. LATA studio volunteers support periods 1 -3 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and periods 1-2 on Tuesday and Thursday in the following volunteer shifts:

Period 1: 8:30 am – 10:30 am

Period 2:10:15 am – 12:15 pm

Period 3: 12:15 pm – 2:15 pm

THE VISUAL, MEDIA AND PERFORMING ARTS INSTITUTES offer self-select, after-school and weekend workshops to middle and high school students, once weekly across ten weeks during Fall and Spring sessions and twice weekly across five weeks over summer. Institutes volunteers support teaching artists and students by lending their expertise in a specific medium and assisting teaching artists with studio set-up and transitions. Volunteer shifts vary from workshop to workshop.

ARTISTS IN THE MIDDLE (AIM) is Inner-City Arts' summer programming for incoming 6th – 8th grade students, during which students have the opportunity to hone their skills in four different art forms during one of two three-week sessions. AIM studio volunteers support by assisting teaching artists with studio set-up and transitions, motivating students to engage in the creative process, and sometimes participating in projects and exercises alongside students. AIM studio volunteers support periods 1 -2 Monday – Friday in the following volunteer shifts:

Up to 100 trees will be planted in the neighborhood bounded by:

Harding Street — North

La Jara Street — South

Coke Avenue — East

Downey Avenue – West

Collins Neighborhood Association and Girl Scout Troop 1353/1363 are committed to help plant, water and care for these trees for their first year.

Come help plant the trees!

Volunteers of all ages are welcome at this event to help plant and water these young trees

No experience is needed, we will train you.

Can you and/or your organization serve as Water Brigade volunteers to help water the newly planted trees on planting day?

Volunteers are needed to help make sure each tree is deep watered with 15 gallons on planting day to help them get off to a good start.

Would your group like to provide refreshments for the volunteers?

Can you and/or your organization assist with watering the trees during their first year?

Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff will deliver all the trees and tools on planting day.

The Port of Long Beach and CAL FIRE have provided funding to plant 10,000 trees in Long Beach neighborhoods through 2022.  Residents, businesses and community groups partner with Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau to provide volunteers at the tree planting events.

Public Works will survey the neighborhood for tree planting locations and Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff will mail letters to the property owners of all the adjacent sites to notify them that trees will be planted and to provide them with an opportunity to decline them.

Housing and Neighborhood Services Bureau staff will deliver all the trees and tools on planting day.

Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or would like additional information.
